Perhaps no other disease compares to obesity in terms of prevalence, prejudice, morbidity, and mortality. Missouri statistics are staggering: - Nearly 40% of Missouri youth were either at-risk for overweight or were presently overweight in 2001 (Dietary Intake Summary Report, MODHSS, 2003).
- Obese youth face higher risk factors for diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease—all of which were once thought to be conditions usually found in adults.
- Physical and emotional costs of obesity, the financial costs to the nation for obesity-related illness exceed $117 billion per year.
